Google Groups subscribe requires a Google account, if done via the web page. But it’s also possible to subscribe via email, like with traditional mailing lists.

To subscribe, send an email to:

GROUPNAME+subscribe@googlegroups.com

For unsubscribing, the same:

GROUPNAME+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com
